How did Daria enter the collage art world? Where has this style developed from? What attracted Daria most to create this technique?

All this has started during an exhibition “The Reconstruction” in the Museum of the modern art (Moscow). Then I have thought that it would be very interesting to reconstruct some images with the help of glossy magazines. Except for that I searched for a way of overlapping of a fashion with art in various arts - objects. In a result I have received own style of a collage named by.

What message Daria wants to convey through her collage works?

What message Daria wants to convey through her collage works?

I would like that my collages forced the spectator to think and to peer into details, both on my collage and during lives as a whole. In fact human life consists of fine details. All of us live in huge circulation, where exactly the smallest details (pieces) form a concrete situation. Absence or presence of any details (pieces) creates this or that mood, a way of life, desires, dreams, etc.

How does Daria gather the materials usually? Why does she prefer to pick images from fashion range?

How does Daria gather the materials usually? Why does she prefer to pick images from fashion range?

More often magazine cuttings are materials for my works. I collect a material on color and its shades, brightness, and also to sense. The main thing is a theme which inspires me, for example, a fashion. Why a fashion? I believe, what in a fashion all should be ideal and faultless. The same qualities are available in any true work of art.

Does Daria use computer software while creating these works? Does Daria draw the sketch before? How does she arrange or choose the image to collage?

Does Daria use computer software while creating these works? Does Daria draw the sketch before? How does she arrange or choose the image to collage?

If it is a computer collage it is completely made on a computer. Here I use different graphic programs. If it is manual work process of its creation is much more difficult. My tools are a pencil, scissors, glue, a brush. Materials are the whole packs of magazines. First of all, it is necessary to understand idea and to create an internal image of object. Further I make the sketch and as any artist I think over color and a composition. The creation of semantic filling of object occupies a highly important place. For example, recently portrait collages have the big popularity. More often, they are private commercial projects. I meet the client and talk to him. I observe of him and I try to learn all his private world. Then, during operating time, I embody this world at images and elements of the general collage. The selection of images to a collage occurs by search of details in different magazines. Sometimes, if the client loves any concrete world places, I try to find their image, for example on the Internet, and it is necessary to paste in the collage.

Would Daria talk about her favorite works? What’s Daria’s creating concept or inspiration of it?

Would Daria talk about her favorite works? What’s Daria’s creating concept or inspiration of it?

It is a difficult question. Each work is liked to me while it is in process of the creation. The process of creation of a collage and all its stages are most interestingly to me. The ending is my favorite moment in creation of each my work. Always it is possible to compare expected result and the conceived idea. An entourage, a people and events which occur to me, influence on my creativity greatly. For example, many my friends are known young Russian designers of clothes and models. All these people work in the world of a fashion and they are my basic circle. Each our joint meeting inspires me on new ideas and projects.

What inspired Daria to create three-dimensional installation “JL”? What’s the concept of this exhibition?

What inspired Daria to create three-dimensional installation “JL”? What’s the concept of this exhibition?

First of all “JL” is an allegory of people which are sick with illness of a fashion. The installation is also a parallel with photos of known photographer Helmut Newton « Dressed and Naked ». On the one hand my dummies are dressed in a suit of a collage, but on the other hand they are completely naked. Here I have decided to transfer a collage from a flatness on volume. (in detail please see the Moscow Times article on internet: http://context.themoscowtimes.com/stories/2006/06/09/107.html).

What information or source Daria like to absorb everyday? Who is Daria’ favorite designer or artist?

Every day I use the Internet and I look materials which are written by my friends in different mass-media. Especially it is interesting to me, what they invented new and how did they realize their ideas. I’m looking through series of glossy magazines Vogue, L’Offi ciel, Harper’s Bazaar. I adore Andy Warhol and Yves Klein, James Rosenquist. I like Alexander McQueen and John Galliano too. I like to compare the well-known artists of pop art and masters of a fashion, to search for fortuitousness and regularity in their creativity.

For work, for life, or for fun, what does Daria want to do next?

First of all the Pieces Art is the meaning of my life. Further I plan to create set of projects. They will be devoted to serious themes of a survival of people in the difficult postindustrial world.

Daria was born in 1986 in Kaliningrad, in 1989 she moved to Moscow where she lives now. She also lived in London for a while where she was working with An-drew Logan (artist) and Zandra Rhodes (famous designer). Daria started mastering in her own technique from the early childhood and her success came faster than she expected. Daria is helding exhibitions in galleries, museums and clubs of Moscow (“Stella art” gallery, Museum of Contemporary Arts, “Kult” club, etc). She is famous around Russian celebrities who like to order private collage portraits. She gets warm reviews from art-critics in mass-media and interviews with her appear in such influent issues as Vogue, Afi sha, etc.As an illustrator for magazines, Daria is regularly cooperating with GQ, L’Officiel, Harper’s Bazaar, L’Optimum, Men’s Health, Moulin Rouge. Her works may be provocative and scandal but Daria is different in life – calm, clever and confident. She is also fond of making manikins and video-arts.
